Senate Decision Delivers Funding Certainty for Queensland Independent Schools

23 June 2017

Queensland independent schools can now plan for the future with greater certainty and confidence following the passage of the Australian Education Amendment Bill 2017 in the Senate last night.

Independent Schools Queensland Executive Director David Robertson welcomed the additional funding and accelerated transition timeframe agreed to by the Australian Government as part of its negotiations to secure Senate support for the Bill.

“These funding reforms will create a more equitable and consistent national platform from which to apply the Australian Government’s multi-billion dollar investment in the nation’s schools,” Mr Robertson said.

“It is heartening to see good public policy that delivers more funds to schools with the greatest need prevail,” he said.

“Queensland independent schools supported this Bill because it sought to address inconsistencies and anomalies in the existing schools funding arrangements and provides a sustainable Australian Government funding model for the future.

“This legislation lays a strong foundation for Australia’s education future.”

Mr Robertson said ISQ looked forward to working with its national body ISCA and the Australian Goverment on the implementation of the amended legislation.
