ISQ Welcomes New Federal Education Minister
Independent Schools Queensland (ISQ) has welcomed today’s announcement that the Hon Dan Tehan MP will take up the role as Federal Education Minister in Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s new-look Cabinet.
ISQ Executive Director David Robertson congratulated Mr Tehan on his appointment.
Mr Robertson said the independent sector looked forward to working constructively with him on key issues, including resolving future federal school funding arrangements.
“The independent sector will continue to engage proactively and productively with the new Minister as the Australian Government finalises its position on the recommendations from the National School Resourcing Board’s socio-economic status (SES) score review and a new National Education Reform Agreement,” Mr Robertson said.
“ISQ will continue to advance its position that federal school funding should follow student need regardless of which non-government school a student attends,” he said.
“It’s critical that the Australian Government, in consultation with key stakeholders, beds down federal school funding arrangements and the timeframe in which they will be delivered, to give independent schools and their communities the certainty and stability they need to plan for the short and medium term.”
“ISQ is looking forward to working with the new Minister on achieving this.”
Mr Robertson thanked Senator the Hon Simon Birmingham for his leadership of the education portfolio over the past three years and the Minister’s principled approach to developing a fairer and more transparent schools funding model.
“The sector thanks Mr Birmingham for his support for parental choice in schooling and his consultative approach to advancing the Australian Government’s school education reform agenda,” he said.
“The sector wishes him well in his new role as Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment.”
