Queensland Budget Maintains Support for School Choice and Diversity
Independent Schools Queensland has welcomed the Queensland Government’s ongoing investment in non-state school communities in the 2019-20 State Budget.
The Budget includes an overall allocation of $711.7 million in state recurrent funding and $100 million in capital assistance for independent and Catholic schools in 2019-20.
ISQ Acting Executive Director Shari Armistead said the capital budget for non-state schools included the second tranche of a three-year $52.6 million capital funding injection to independent schools promised by the Palaszczuk Government in the 2017 State Election.
“This is welcome news for the families of 1 in 7 school-age students who choose independent schools and who pay the majority of the building and maintenance costs in their children’s schools,” she said.
Ms Armistead said parental confidence in Queensland independent schools remained strong with enrolments now exceeding 123,000 students at more than 210 schools.
“This additional capital funding will contribute towards the significant costs associated with providing new and upgraded facilities to accommodate the sector’s growing student population,” she said.
“ISQ-commissioned research estimates the sector will need to raise $1.2 billion to accommodate an extra 46,600 students projected to enrol in Queensland independent schools between now and 2036.”
Ms Armistead also welcomed other budget measures including additional funding for universal kindergarten access and students with disabilities.
“ISQ will examine the budget fine print over the coming days to drill down into what it means for independent schools and will work with the Queensland Government to ensure the best outcomes for independent school communities.”
