Independent Schools Queensland (ISQ) welcomes the appointment of Cheryl Vardon as independent reviewer of the accreditation framework for non-state schools in Queensland.

ISQ Chief Executive Officer Christopher Mountford said Ms Vardon’s appointment by Education Minister Grace Grace should hopefully see a productive and forward-thinking review of the Non-State School Accreditation Board’s (NSSAB) current accreditation framework.

“An independent review of the regulatory framework which guides non-state schools is a welcome and proactive measure supported by the independent school sector,” Mr Mountford said.

“Now is an opportune time to look at how NSSAB can continue to be a supportive force for the rapidly growing non-state school sector ensuring accountability, fostering educational choice and maintaining the high level of educational outcomes the sector’s parents, who choose to send their children to these schools, have come to expect.

“Almost 300,000 students, or roughly 35% of all Queensland school students, attend non-state schools.

“Any review of NSSAB and its regulatory powers should be carried out with the goal of ensuring that current and future non-state schools catering for this growing number of students are adequately supported and guided in their endeavour to provide world-class education for these children and their families.

“ISQ looks forward to working closely with Ms Vardon throughout the review process.”
