Parental confidence in Queensland independent schools continues to increase with new data showing sector enrolments going from strength to strength.

The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics Schools 2025 data shows the independent school sector in Queensland has grown by 7,166 students over the past 12 months, representing an increase of 4.6%. Independent schools now educate 18% of all Queensland students – the highest proportion on record.

Over the past decade, enrolments in Queensland independent schools have increased by 37% growing from 116,571 students to 159,888 students. This marks the 7th consecutive year in which independent school enrolments have grown at a faster rate than other sectors.

Independent Schools Queensland Chief Executive Officer, Christopher Mountford, said the continued growth highlights the value Queensland parents place on genuine choice in education.

“Parents want access to high-quality, affordable schooling options that reflect their values and meet their children’s needs, and independent schools continue to deliver that choice for communities across Queensland,” Mr Mountford said.

“Parents know that independent schools are incredibly diverse, and with more than half charging $5,500 or less per year in fees, these schools are accessible to a growing cohort of aspirational families across the state.”

The independent sector in Queensland comprises nearly 240 diverse schools, including small vocational colleges, special assistance schools supporting students who have disengaged from mainstream education, and schools with a wide range of faith-based and philosophical foundations.

Analysis of the ABS data also showed the following changes to the independent schooling sector between 2024 and 2025:

  • Total enrolments of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in Queensland independent schools increased by 8.4% to 7,752 students.
  • Full time equivalent teaching staff at Queensland independent schools increased by 4.3% to 12,335.
